47 per cent of UK smartphone users would like to use their mobile more to pay for goods and services, suggesting British consumers are at a tipping point in mobile payment adoption.

The figure comes from research by integrated mobile solutions firm Oxygen8, who also found that while most UK mobile users were familiar with completing transactions via smartphones, there is considerable demand for more.

The most popular services were purchasing an item on eBay (26 per cent) and paying bills (14 per cent), while 10 per cent of respondents had purchased cloths via an app, and 9 per cent had bought groceries.

“The research reveals that mobile users in the UK are already accustomed to buying goods and services with their mobile phones,” said Kevin Dawson, head of payments at Oxygen8. “As of next year, they will be able to do so without the hassle of finding their credit or debit cards, and the inconvenience of processing that payments, just one click and it will appear on their mobile phone bill.

“Not only will mobile payments provide a new and simplistic opportunity for consumers, the planned groundbreaking developments will open up new payments opportunities for companies wanting to make their own products and services more accessible to their customers.”
