M2M Devices will Quadruple in Next Five Years, says Juniper

The market for M2M (Machine to Machine) and embedded devices will reach 400m units by the end of 2017, according to a study from Juniper Research. Thats up nearly quadruple the current number, of 110m.

According to Juniper, the growth will be driven by dropping prices of M2M modules, and especially 3G modules – as 2G starts to be retired – and the promise of increased driver efficiency and cost management. The telematics and consumer electronics sectors are rapidly becoming the two anchor industries for M2M.

Though they only ship in low volumes currently, Juniper also expects 4G chipsets to grow after finding their market in the automotive industry, and specific applications such as live video monitoring.
