Apple Acquires Music Analytics Firm Semetric

Apple Logo HQ HeadquartersApple has acquired UK-based media analysis firm Semetric, best known for its Musicmetric platform for measuring the popularity of an artist, using data from social networking, file sharing sites and streaming services.

The acquisition was reported by The Guardian, citing documents which show Semetrics registered address moving to Apples London headquarters, as well as the appointment of senior Apple attorney Gene Levoff as a director of Semetric last year.

Apple has refused to comment on the acquisition or its plans for Semetric going forward, but it seems likely to be related to Apples $3bn purchase of Beats last year.

While Beats was best known as a headphone manufacturer, its widely speculated that Apple was most interested in the Beats Music service, as a first step towards Apple launching a Spotify competitor. If this service emerges, it seems likely that Semetric will be offered as an analytics dashboard for content owners.
