Apple is reportedly working to bring subscription-based content to its News app.
Reuters reports that Apple News will introduce a paywall option for publishers, moving away from the current focus on ad-funded articles. As it stands, publishers which only make their content available via subscription can choose to either include their articles as normal, or offer short snippets which direct paying customers to their site for the site for the full story.
It's currently unclear whether this is intended to be a revenue source for Apple by taking a cut of any new subscriptions, or just an olive branch to publishers who, according to Reuters' sources, are unhappy with the lack of user data Apple passes onto them.
On the company's Q4 2015 earnings call, just a few weeks after the launch of Apple News, CEO Tim Cook claimed that the service had attracted 40m users, though it wasn't clear whether these were regular active users or one-offs.
