Apple Releases Tool to Remove Free U2 Album

u2 goodbyeJust six days after releasing U2s album for free through its iTunes service, Apple has bowed to public demand and made a tool available that removes the music.

The album release, which automatically downloaded itself on devices without needing user permission first, was at the time called “the largest album release ever” by Apple.

However, many users complained about the fact that the album, Songs of Innocence, had been added to their accounts automatically, and that it was not immediately obvious how to remove it.

As a result, the company has provided a one-click removal button, with users who remove the album given until 13 October to download it again for free. After that date, they will be charged if they try to add them again, as with standard iTunes albums.

“Some customers asked for the ability to delete Songs of Innocence from their library, so we set up itunes.com/soi-remove to let them easily do so,” said Adam Howorth, a spokesperson for Apple, talking to the BBC. “Any customer that needs additional help should contact AppleCare.”

At the time of the release, Bono of U2 acknowledged that not everyone would appreciate the free download. “People who havent heard our music, or werent remotely interested, might play us for the first time because were in their library,” he wrote in a blog post to accompany the launch. “And for the people out there who have no interest in checking us out, look at it this way…the blood, sweat and tears of some Irish guys are in your junk mail.”
