Awards Preview – Mobile Travel & Tourism Solution

And so we come to our final preview of the contenders for this year’s Effective Mobile Marketing Awards, and today we are looking at the Most Effective Mobile Travel & Tourism Solution category, where there are six entries vying for the honours.

The first is Hotel.de and Apertomove for the Hotel.de mobile site for the hotel-booking portal of the same name. This is a good-looking, intuitive site, available in for 37 countries, and localised for each, with a choice of 17 languages. The site is optimised for touch and gesture for a fast, intuitive browsing experience. Click-to-call and click-to-map facilities add to the app-like experience.

Next up is Barclays and Profero for the Barclays Bikes mobile app. This has rapidly become an indispensable tool for anyone who uses the Barclays Cycle Hire scheme in London. With most of the docking stations tucked away down quieter side roads, and signage not great, users need a reliable way of finding out where their nearest cycle for hire is located and, just as crucially, if there is likely to be somewhere to dock it at the other end. That’s exactly what this app offers. At the time of entry, when there were 160,000 members of the scheme, it had been downloaded 130,000 times.

Our third contender is easyJet and Mobile Travel Technologies for the easyJet mobile app. The app looks great, form the moment you fire it up, and with the ability to book flights, check the status of flights, and manage your bookings, it offers real value too. In fact, if you are preregistered, easyJet estimates that you can book a flight using the app in less than 30 seconds.

Next up is the Fort Lauderdale Visitors Bureau for the Sunny.org mobile site. The organisation describes this as its No.1 marketing tool, and when you take a look at it, it’s not hard to see why, with information on restaurants, hotels, events, deals, and quick and easy access to the brand’s social media pages. There’s also a dedicated section for cruise travellers, aimed at increasing the length of pre- and post-cruise stays. The site is designed to help users plan a vacation before arrival, and to act as a helpful free concierge service once they get there, with a ‘Plan my day’ feature to help them get their most of the time in the resort.

The fifth nominee in this category is Hotels.com for its mobile apps and sites. Both offer a fast, intuitive and easy way to find a hotel in almost any city in the world in just a few clicks. Traffic and revenue figures from the sites are confidential, but hugely impressive.

The final contender is XS2TheWorld and McCann Erickson for the Discover Hong Kong AR app. This offers an interactive, AR-powered guide to this most vibrant of cities. Users can explore the city and its attractions simply by holding their phone in front of them. The app includes over 7,000 hotspots, and to avoid data roaming charges, all the app content is available offline. The application has been downloaded more than 80,000 times in its first year.

And that, after three weeks of daily previews, rounds up our look at all the contenders for this years Awards. All the winners will be announced at tomorrows Awards Ceremony, which takes place at the London Film Museum on the site of County Hall on South Bank, a stones throw from the London Eye.
