Charge Your Phone Through Your Nordli, as IKEA Integrates Wireless Charging

ikea wireless chargingFurnishing retailer IKEA has launched a range of bedside tables, lamps and desks that integrate wireless charging technology, enabling owners to recharge compatible devices without the need for cables or plugs.

The range will use Qi, the global wireless charging standard created by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), and will be available in Europe and North America from April onwards, with a global rollout shortly after.

“Our belief is that mobile phones are a vital part of peoples life at home and their desire to stay connected, and Qi addresses an unmet need to keep devices powered,” said Björn Block, range manager for lighting and wireless charging at IKEA. “As a member of WPC, we value the access to the leading and most advanced global standard for wireless charging.”

Qi is already in use in 3,000 hotels, restaurants, airports and public locations worldwide, and more that 80 smartphone models featuring integrated Qi technology. The technology has had a recent boost in profile with the news that Samsungs new flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge models will include Qi functionality.

However, only compatible devices will be able to charge using the Qi tech, unlike rival technologies such as Powermat, used in Starbucks stores, which use a peripheral to enable any device to recharge wirelessly.

“IKEA is delivering on its vision of making life at home better with this innovative, stylish and useful new collection that shows consumers the beauty and simplicity of wireless charging,” said Menno Treffers, chairman of the WPC. “We applaud IKEA for its unmatched insight and their unique passion for making wireless charging affordable and simple for consumers.”
