$1m QPrize Competition In Full Swing
I spent part of the afternoon at the Google Campus just round the corner from our offices. Today is the final of the Western Europe and Eastern Europe regional finals of the 2012 QPrize competition, run by Qualcomm Ventures.
The competition, now in its third year offers a total of $1m prize money to the winners of eight regional competitions for tech startups. Each winner gets $100,000 in prize money, (€100,000 for the European winners),with an additional $150,000 to the overall winner.
Alexander Trewby, co-founder of last year’s winner, Enterproid, kicked things off with an overview of his experiences leading a company that has gone, in his own words, “from zero to 200pmh in two years.” The company develops mobile software that plays to the Bring Your Own Device trend, enabling, in effect, two devices on one handset – one for personal use, the other for business use. It’s currently running a number of pilots with Fortune 500 companies.
There are eight companies in each of the competitions taking place this afternoon, many of whom have a mobile bent. The Western Europe section includes Augment (Augmented Reality); Healthy Heroes (a mobile game); Near (contextual, hyperlocal news service); Smadex (hyperlocal rich media mobile ad network); and Zinc Software (heart sensor platform built around a wireless, ear-worn biosensor).
The Eastern Europe section includes DoxOut (unified cross-platform office suite for PCs and laptops); Masspay (universal mobile payment platform); and Pult (enables a smartphone to stream personal and commercial content to commercial screens).
Each of the companies has 15 minutes to pitch for the prize, with the winners announced this evening. We’ll update the story with details of the winners later.
The Western Europe competition was won by Everplaces, which enables users to save and share places they love and create their own personal travel collection. The Eastern Europe competition was won by Pult.
