BlackBerry Rules. OK?

There has not been an awful lot of good news for BlackBerry-maker RIM of late, but it got some today with the release of figures from the analyst GfK revealing that BlackBerry was the best-selling smartphone in the British market for the second year running.

BlackBerry grabbed 26.3 per cent of December sales, and averaged a 27.7 per cent share during 2011. Globally, the BlackBerry subscriber base grew 35 per cent year-on-year in December to 75m. The UK customer base totaled just over 8.5m active subscribers at the end of 2011.

It would be interesting to know how many new BlackBerry subscribers are coming from the teen market, as opposed to its traditional corporate heartland, but RIM’s release does not offer any such insight. Nor does it offer any other figures from GfK as to who is in second and third place and what the gap is between them. We have approached GfK for this information. As and when the company comes back to us, we’ll update the story.
