MEF Launches African Industry Hub with Vodacom
MEF has launched a regional office in Africa in association with Vodacom to help promote mobile market growth and showcase innovation. The office in Johannesburg will serve as a hub for the trade association’s growing membership in the region.
MEF’s Global Consumer Survey 2012 emphasised Africa’s status as a major growth market and ‘mobile first’ continent. 95 per cent of mobile media users in South Africa say they engage in mobile content and commerce activity, more than people in the US or China. 96 per cent stated that their mobile phone plays an important role in their lives, the highest response of the 10 countries surveyed.
MEF will also provide market analytics, regional initiatives aimed at boosting consumer trust and promoting monetisation, and events connecting local and global stakeholders.
“With such diverse innovation originating in the African continent, it is clear that Africa offers the mobile industry a strategic opportunity to learn and do business,” said Rimma Perelmuter, MEF executive director.
This move comes as research from Informa Telecoms & Media said that it expects mobile subscriptions in Africa to exceed 750m by the end of Q4, 2012 - 17.5 per cent growth, higher than any other region and well above the world average. There will be 1bn mobile subscribers here by 2015, according to the study.
