Schmidt: Android is Winning the War with Apple
That’s the view of Google chairman Eric Schmidt, revealed in an interview with Bloomberg. Schmidt told Bloomberg that customers are now activating more than 1.3m Android devices every day. According to figures from Gartner, Android enjoyed a 72 per cent market share in Q3, 2012, compared to Apple’s 14 per cent.
“This is a huge platform change; this is of the scale of 20 years ago, Microsoft versus Apple,” Schmidt told Bloomberg reporter, Brian Womack. “We’re winning that war pretty clearly now.”
Schmidt also defended Google’s policy on paying tax. Despite the fact that Google avoided around $2bn (£1.2bn) in worldwide income taxes in 2011 by shifting $9.8bn into a Bermuda shell company, Schmidt said: “We pay lots of taxes; we pay them in the legally prescribed ways…It’s called capitalism. We are proudly capitalistic. I’m not confused about this.”
