skobbler Launches ForeverMap2 for Kindle Fire
skobbler has launched its hybrid (online and offline) mapping app, ForeverMap 2, for the Amazon Kindle Fire from Monday 17th December 2012. With no support for Google Maps and no comparable alternatives available on the Kindle Fire, skobbler says it plans to quickly establish itself as the No.1 mapping app for the Amazon tablet.
ForeverMap 2 offer users unlimited use of worldwide online maps as standard, together with optional downloadable maps of cities, countries, continents and even the world for offline use. This, says skobbler, makes it an ideal option for anyone who wants to avoid hefty charges and inconsistent data connections while roaming.
ForeverMap 2 uses OpenStreetMap, a worldwide open-source project that has created what skobbler describes as: “the most dynamic map on the planet”. The map is updates by a contributor base totalling almost 1m users. Users can bookmark places of interest to save key locations to the current map, and access Wikipedia-based descriptions for sites of interest. Other features include address search, location finder, route calculation and an extensive POI database for both online and offline use through optional map downloads.
skobbler also offers GeOS map access technology, which enables developers to implement OpenStreetMap into their services, providing them with an alternative to Google Maps and other platforms. GeOS has already been offered to a few companies on request, and skobbler says it aims to roll out the full version in the near future.
ForeverMap 2 is available as a free download for the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD, with full use of online worldwide maps included as standard. Offline maps are available as in-app purchases, priced at 69p for cities, £1.99 for countries, £3.99 for continents and £7.99 for a global map. ForeverMap 2 is also now available for the NOOK Color, NOOK Tablet and NOOK HD/HD+ from Barnes & Noble.
