Could Mario Be Coming to Mobile?

MarioAfter the failure of its Wii U games console caused Nintendo forecast a ¥35bn (£20.4m) operating loss for 2013, leading to a 18 per cent drop in share price, speculation has begun that it could be bringing its iconic characters to mobile devices.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Bloomberg that, following the explosion in smartphone and tablet usage, the company is “naturally studying how smart devices can be used” in order to grow its business.

Thats notably non-committal, however, and Iwata pointed out: “It’s not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone”.

Nevertheless, if Nintendo did bring its games to mobile, it would undoubtedly have a major effect on the app ecosystem – and it would be interesting to see how it measured up to companies like Rovio, which has essentially made its living by being the mobile answer to Nintendo.
