Dutch City Trialling NFC Payments

Three of the Netherlands biggest banks, ABN AMRO, ING and Rabobank, have launched an NFC mobile payments trial in the city of Leiden, in partnership with MasterCard and KPN.

1,000 consumers have been equipped with an NFC-enabled Samsung Galaxy Express, loaded with their bank’s payment app. As of today (Monday 2 September), theyll be able to pay using their phones in 150 participating locations around the city.

For security reason, theres a €25 (£21) limit on transactions, at which point the user will have to enter a PIN number on their device.

The trial will run for three months, after which each bank will individually decide whether and how it will offer this payment method to customers.
