Facebook Messenger Hits 1bn MAUs

Messenger BillionFacebook Messenger – the standalone app for Facebooks messaging service – has passed the milestone of 1bn monthly active users (MAUs).

According to Facebook, over 17bn photos are sent via Messenger each month, and 22m GIFs each day. Since the launch of its in-app basketball game in March, it has been played 1.2bn times, while the football game launched ahead of Euro 2016 has been played 250m times.

To mark the occasion, Facebook has launched a small bonus feature in the app – when users send a balloon emoji, the recipients screen fills will animated balloons.

Messenger is the companys third service to break the 1bn mark. On mobile alone, Facebooks core social network hit 1bn back in 2014, and WhatsApp followed suit in February this year. By comparison, Instagram last reported MAUs of 400m in 2015.
