Google Acquires Music Streaming Service Songza

Songza - Mobile Screenshot (3)Google has acquired US-based music streaming service Songza for an undisclosed sum.

In a market crowded with the likes of Pandora, Spotify and Deezer, Songzas USP is its curated contextual playlists based on the time of day, tailored to the different moods and environments – so on a Friday night, they might be able to choose between dance party, love and romance or unwinding.

According to Googles blog post on the acquisition: “We arent planning any immediate changes to Songza, so it will continue to work like usual for existing users.”

However, Google looks set to incorporate Songzas capabilities into its own streaming service, Play Music, and says it is also exploring opportunities to work it into YouTube and other Google products.

This actually isnt the first time Songza has been acquired – back in October 2008, it was bought by online music retailer Amie Street, which was then itself bought out by Amazon in 2010 and subsequently shut down, leaving the companys founders to refocus their efforts on the music app. Since then, Amazon has reportedly been one of the largest investors in Songza, making the fact that it has ended up finding its home at Google all the more interesting.
