Google updates Local Guides program with new perks and features

Google Maps Local GuidesGoogle has announced that it will roll out updates to its Local Guides program, which sees people around the world add reviews, photos and location information to Google Maps. The updates include a new point system, new levels, and new ways to earn points.

With the update, contributions that have a higher impact for Google Maps users will earn Guides more points. In addition, points will now be earned for rating places and fact checking information from other community members.

In addition, Google has added five new levels to Local Guides, bringing it up to 10 levels. Those ranked from four to 10 will get unique badges.

Guides who are level two and above will continue to gain exclusive access to new product features and perks. However, in select countries, those ranked from level four to 10 can redeem a free three-month Google Play Music subscription and 75 per cent off a rental in the Google Play Movie store.

“Around the world, Local Guides help people get around easier, navigate and explore with confidence, and support local businesses,” said Laura Slabin, director of Local Guides at Google, in a blog post. “We look forward to continuing to work with Local Guides to make the world and local communities more accessible to everyone.”
