Googles automotive ambitions extend beyond the driverless car

Google is working on an embedded version of Android for use in cars, according to a report from Reuters. Android’s current in-car software, Android Auto, runs on the driver’s phone, which must be connected to the car. The version under development would be built into the car, so would not require the presence of an Android phone. In addition to delivering mapping and streaming music services, it would also be able to tap into the data generated by the vehicle for maintenance purposes.

Whether car makers would be keen on one homogenous OS, potentially removing one key point of differentiation from their competitors, however, is a moot point. Google has not commented on the report.
