Multi-DeviceClassifieds website Gumtree has launched a new responsive website designed to create an effortless cross-channel experience. The launch is accompanied by the release of a new iPad app, which also makes use of the new design.

The new design is based heavily on customer feedback, and was designed after studying over 40 hours of user-testing video and receiving feedback from over 4000 customers. The new website has already been rolled out to all mobile and tablet visitors, and around 10 per cent of desktop visitors, which will increase as the team behind it continue to make changes based on feedback. Lead designer Melanie Yencken described the customer-driven approach to design as “a big shift in our mindset as a company”.

“With over 60 per cent of our visits coming from mobile devices and the growth of the tablet market, we wanted to ensure that we provide a consistent experience for our customers on their preferred device,” said Polly Howden, mobile product manager at Gumtree. “Gumtree is a heritage in the online classifieds market and we respected the trust that our customers have in us by providing a smooth and enjoyable experience across our platforms.”

It enables customers to browse over 1.5m ads, as well as managing, editing and promoting their own ads. The app takes advantage of the bigger screen size of tablets, with a focus on visual search results.

“Our focus is on ensuring our customers have a seamless and successful experience on our site,” said Gioia Manetti, chief customer officer at Gumtree. “We want to empower our customers to sell or buy from wherever they are, whenever the mood suits them and on whatever device they choose.”
