i.TV Acquires GetGlue

Second-screen company i.TV has acquired TV check-in platform GetGlue for an undisclosed sum.

GetGlue, first launched in 2010, is a social network which enables users to tell others what theyre currently watching in exchange for virtual stickers and, in some cases, rewards.

The service, which has 4.5m registered users, says it drives 30 per cent of tweets during primetime TV in the US.

“With this kind of reach, it’s no wonder more than 75 TV networks partner with GetGlue to engage with their fans, and 30 media companies integrate with the GetGlue API,” said i.TV CEO, Brad Pelo. “While there are a variety of general-purpose social platforms, we’ve found that TV viewers prefer an experience built just for them.

“Together, i.TV and GetGlue are positioned to deliver the richest, most enjoyable, and most social second screen experience at a time when viewers are more eager than ever to watch and share with each other. We will have more to announce on that note early next year.”

GetGlue will continue to operate as an independent product, with the added benefit of i.TV’s partners and services.
