Line has updated its OTT messaging app with mobile payment functionality, for the first time outside of Japan.
Line Pay enables users to store their card details and make payments in-app as well as in physical stores. For now, the sum total of what users can actually buy with Line Pay seems to be limited to Lines own content, most notably stickers, but it looks set to expand that in the future.
In Lines home territory of Japan, where the feature first launched in October, its possible to use Pay to split an items cost between users and transfer money accordingly, but theres no sign of this functionality in the global version yet. 
Inside the app, payment details are protected by a separate password – and, on iOS devices with the capability, TouchID fingerprint scanning.
