Macys Tries Changing Room Tablets On for Size

Macys tablets fitting roomUS department store Macy’s is introducing tablets into its stores in an attempt to leverage brick-and-mortars biggest advantage over online fashion retailers – the ability to try on clothes before buying them.

The store’s Manhattan Beach branch in California has upgraded some of its women’s fitting rooms to include tablets. Customers can use these tablets – or their own smartphones, via a Macy’s app – to pick out items or different sizes they want to try on. These items are then delivered via chute, allowing the customer to try on a wide variety of clothes without ever having to leave the booth.

The dressing rooms were refitted by customer experience firm Hointer, which claims the revamp cost around $200 per fitting room.

For now, the test is still very limited – the tablets are only available in a single department of the store, athletics and swimwear, where redressing to pick out a new item can be especially tricky. Macy’s is likely to expand the trial to its lingerie department, Bloomberg reports, but wouldn’t confirm any plans to roll out the tech to other locations.
