MVNO FreedomPop Brings Free Data, Calls and Texts to UK

Finger on phone touchscreenFreedomPop, a MVNO which offers free SIM contracts to subscribers, is launching in the UK through a partnership with operator 3.

The basic contract includes 200 minutes of calls, 200 texts and 200MB of data monthly for free, plus unlimited calls and texts to other FreedomPop subscribers. The company makes its money through add-on packages which offer bigger allowances or additional services such as a second phone number.

In the US, where FreedomPop first launched in 2012, 49 per cent of subscribers pay for these larger packages, COO Stephen Stokols told TechCrunch. This is good news for the company, given that according to Stokols, “we only need 30 per cent to pay to make our model work”.

The UK version is rolling out in a closed beta, with SIMs available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The company is also launching the beta of its Jetsetter data roaming product, which offers 100MB of free data across the UK, Spain, and France.
