eCommerce company Shopify has launched a new app called Sello which aims to make creating an online business easier than ever, with every aspect of set-up and daily maintenance able to be carried out through the app, including accepting payments and sharing product listings on social media.

In the past, Shopify has been focused on B2B products, providing retailers with the infrastructure to sell their products through existing websites or developing online stores from scratch. Sello is the companys first consumer-facing app, and is aimed at small business owners and people selling their own creations.

“eCommerce is still out of the hands of a lot of people,” said Christopher Lobay, director of product at Shopify. “Sello removes those barriers, helping people focus on ideas they believe in. Were giving them a simple, fast, and approachable way to sell for the first time.”

Shopify are emphasising the use of social promotion with the app, which seems to focus more on creating product listings and handling purchases, rather than enabling product discovery by customers entering it to browse.

The app is being offered for free, with no transaction fees (although merchants will still have to pay for payment processing), with the hope that retailers who find the platform useful will upgrade to the larger Shopify platform.
