Sony Unveils Project Morpheus VR Prototype

sony project morpheusSony Computer Entertainment has revealed the prototype of its long-gestating Project Morpheus virtual reality headset designed for use with its Playstation 4 gaming console at the 2015 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.

According to Sony, Morpheus will enable players to experience a new level of immersion and presence, feeling as though they are physically inside the virtual world of a game.

Project Morpheus was first announced at last years GDC and has garnered considerable interest from both fans and industry insiders since then. Sony has taken feedback from both developers and consumers over the past year, and made adjustments to Morpheus to further its capabilities.

The updated Morpheus features a 5.7 inch 1080p OLED display that expands the field of view and enables low persistence, removing motion blur or flicker, both of which can disrupt immersion. The Morpheus supports 120fps output, producing incredibly smooth visuals, and 360 degree tracking to make it more accurate at translating the movements of the player.

Developers will be given access to the new prototype to create Morpheus content for the PS4, with Sony releasing an SDK that converts 60fps images to 120fps, allowing developers to update any content already developed.

“With the technical specs achieved on the new prototype, we are one step closer to realising our vision for making amazing VR experiences on PS4, and ultimately to deliver a real sense of presence to players,” said Shuhei Yoshida, president of SCE Worldwide Studios. “We believe that the near-final technology of Morpheus combined with the power of PS4 will provide a standard for game developers to target as they build on their creative ideas and turn them into VR games and experiences.”
