Tate Promotes Art Through iPhone Game

[img_assist|nid=16272|title=|desc=|link=popup|align=left|width=150|height=97]Art gallery group Tate, which runs four galleries in the UK, has launched a free iPhone game called Race Against Time.

The game, created by content creation and design company, Somethin’ Else, casts the user as a wily chameleon, travelling through the history of modern art in order to defeat evil Dr Greyscale’s plan to remove all the colour from the world. As the gamer races through time from 1890 back to the present day, the background, platforms and enemies change to reflect major art movements and works from the last 121 years of modern art, as illustrated by artist duo Peskimo.

Somethin’ Else has also created a bespoke soundtrack for the game which provides an audio journey through the time period. Each decade has a stylistic variant of the main theme, and uses instruments and processing appropriate to the era.

“Our aim is to bring art to new audiences, who are interested in a more playful experience than cultural institutions typically offer,” says Tate head of content and creative director, Jane Burton. “With stunning graphics, addictive gameplay and (a) stylish soundtrack, we believe Race Against Time will do just that.”
