Twitter Buys Social Data Firm Gnip

GnipTwitter has acquired social data firm Gnip, which it describes as a long-standing Twitter data partner for an undisclosed sum.

Gnip aggregates and analyses every public tweet for a variety of purposes, most notably gauging public sentiment and spotting trends, for clients in industries including business intelligence, marketing and PR.

“We want to make our data even more accessible, and the best way to do that is to work directly with our customers to get a better understanding of their needs,” said Jana Messerschmidt, Twitter VP of global business development & platform. “As Twitter has grown into a platform that delivers more than 500m tweets per day, Gnip has played a crucial role in collecting and digesting our public data and delivering the most essential tweets to partners.”

Twitter will be leveraging Gnips expertise to further extend its own data platform and APIs, as well as launching new products and solutions.

Gnip will continue to operate its current offering, it seems, with the added benefit of access to Twitters resources and infrastructure.
