Twitter Reaches Out to Games Developers with Unity Integration

twitter fabric unityTwitter has integrated its mobile development service Fabric with popular game engine Unity, enabling developers to embed the social network within the next generation of mobile games and apps.

Unity is one of the most widely used game development engines for mobile gaming, and Twitter worked with hundreds of game developers to build a version of Fabric, its mobile development kit, that would smoothly integrate with Unitys existing functions.

By bringing in tools from Fabric, developers get access to Crashlytics, enabling them to receive detailed, real-time crash reports from users alongside comprehensive user data.

Users will also be able to share their progress and high scores on the social network through in-game prompts, which Twitter claims will mean games that make use of Fabric will gain more traction on social media and boost their organic install rate.

“Victories are sweetest when celebrated,” said Hemal Shah, product manager for Fabric. “Twitter provides a unique platform to let your players celebrate their triumphs in real time. The Twitter feed is live, public and conversational; our tools give you the ability to make your game a part of that conversation.”

Twitter isnt the first web giant to try to forge closer links with the game development community. Amazon launched its own game engine recently, Lumberyard, which is based on one of Unitys key rivals, CryEngine, and integrates with Amazon-owned live-streaming site Twitch and uses Amazon Web Services cloud storage to support online gaming.
