uberTaxi-hailing service Uber has expanded to its fourth UK city, Birmingham, which joins London, Manchester and Leeds as cities within England that can hire private hire vehicles using the app.

While several successful app-based private hire and ride share services have launched in the US, including Uber, Lyft and Sidecar, the UK is still dominated by local taxi firms.

Hailo is Ubers main competitor for the UK, with services available in London, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds. Todays launch sees Uber expanding into a city not also covered by Hailo for the first time.

Currently, Ubers presence in Birmingham is quite small, meaning users may have to wait a while for a car to be available, but with the companys driver loyalty program now in operation, it is able to offer to more incentives that traditional taxi firms, and so may grow quickly.
