Walgreens Duane Reade Pharmacy Rolls Out iBeacons

Scan to order refillWalgreens Duane Reade pharmacy chain is beta testing iBeacons at 10 of its stores in New York City.

iBeacon compatibility has been added to the latest version of the companys iOS app, enabling it to send push notifications when users are nearby, offer real-time mobile coupons based on purchase history and serve up product reviews for price comparison.

Duane Reade is committed to offering great mobile and social experiences in order to increase engagement with its customers. The app already offers a pill reminder function, a prescription barcode scanner for repeat orders, a shopping list and a pedometer.

The app can now be switched to in-store mode, where users will have access to their loyalty card, saved coupons, a floor map of the store, a product locator and product scanning. Coupons and loyalty cards can be scanned at the usual POS. The pharmacy also offers customers instant Instagram 4×4 pictures printed on the spot in store, showing that it is keen to appeal to a young audience.

This new functionality brings it in line with Walgreens iOS app but the company has promised more major app announcements in the coming months.
