WebMD Steps Into the mHealth Market with Healthy Target

web mb healthy targetHealth website WebMD has entered the increasingly-crowded market for mHealth data aggregators, revealing today an expansion for its app that collects data from activity trackers, wireless scales and other biometric-measuring wearables and provides tailored content for users.

The program, called Healthy Target, is integrated into the companys existing app for iPhone, and is designed to provide assistance to individuals managing chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and obesity, as well as those looking to achieve fitness goals or live healthier lifestyles. The program includes functions for goal setting, tracking habit intensity and also provides users with inspirational tips and motivation.

“Consumers will appreciate the ease of incorporating their biometric data into our Healthy Target program and the health insights and recommendations offered to help them sustain a healthier life,” said David Ziegler, director of product management for WebMD. “With more than 40 per cent of consumers using mobile devices to access health information, the time is right for a mobile app that can help translate data into life-improving insights.”

As the mHealth market grows, more and more companies are attempting to position themselves as all-in-one platforms for digital health. Apples iOS 8 announcement included a considerable focus on its upcoming HealthKit app, while Samsung is marketing its SAMI databank with a developer challenge. Including Microsofts HealthVault and Googles much-rumoured Google Fit, the marketplace is looking increasingly filled with big players who WebMD may struggle to compete with.
