10bn Mobile Coupons Will Be Redeemed in 2013

In 2013, 10bn discount coupons will be redeemed on mobile devices and tablet devices, according to a report from Juniper Research.

That forecast is up by more than 50 per cent on last year. In the report, Juniper names a few factors which will drive that growth, including Apples launch of Passbook and the opportunity mobile coupons offer retailers, to marry together their digital and physical assets.

Report author Windsor Holden said: “While we’ve heard that online retail is killing the High Street – witness United Retail filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US and the recent administrations of Jessop’s and Blockbuster in the UK – mobile offers a means of engaging with the consumer at every point in the retail lifecycle, from product discovery to product purchase.”

Juniper also points to the fact that while mobile accounts for a comparatively low volume of coupons issued, it enjoys a disproportionately high number of redemeptions, with an average redemption rate of 10 per cent. However, one factor which is holding back adoption is retailers reluctance to accept compatible POS terminals.
