160,000 Androids Sold Every Day

Earlier today, we reported that the number of people using Android phones has risen by 2,429 per cent over the past 12 months. The figures came from comScore, and in case you needed further proof that Android is on the march, Google VP, Engineering, Andy Rubin, has revealed in a blog post that 160,000 Android devices are being activated every day.

Rubin notes that there are now 60 compatible Android devices, delivered via a global partnership network of 21 OEMs and 59 carriers in 49 countries, and says: “The volume and variety of Android devices continues to exceed even our most optimistic expectations. In some instances, Android devices are selling faster than they can be manufactured.”

Rubin also confirms in the post that Google has open-sourced Android V2.2 (aka Froyo) to device manufacturers, so this should be appearing in new devices soon. Among the improvements it offers are  improved browser performance, and Android cloud-to-device messaging, which makes it easier for mobile applications to sync data.
