17.2bn Apps Downloaded in Q1, Two-thirds on Google Play

Apps-play-store17.2bn Android and iOS apps were downloaded during Q1 2016, according to a report from Sensor Tower – an increase of 8.2 per cent year-on-year.

Google Play accounted for nearly two-thirds of downloads, some 11.1bn, but the App Store actually saw more growth – up 13 per cent year-on-year, compared to 6.7 per cent for Google Play.

The report also identifies the most popular apps in Q1, with WhatsApp in first place with over 125m downloads. Interestingly, though, the messaging app didnt fare as well on iOS as Android. Over four-fifths of those downloads came from Android, and WhatsApp was only the sixth most popular App Store download, where Facebook Messenger topped the list instead.

These social apps shared the spotlight with mobile games – there were eight gaming titles in the top 20, with Piano Tiles 2 the second-biggest iOS app (and fourth overall) and Supercells Clash Royale breaking the top 10 less than a month after launch.
