Over 160bn consumer apps will be downloaded in 2017, according to a report from Juniper Research. By comparison, downloads in 2013 are expected to stand at 80bn.
Factors driving this growth, says Juniper, include wider smartphone adoption, introduction of sticky social functions, and increasing number of free-to-download apps. By 2017, only five per cent of apps will be paid for at the point of download in 2017, down from 6.1 per cent this year.
Games are also set to be the most popular category of apps by far during this period, accounting for 40 per cent of all downloads.
