30 October Launch Date for 4G in the UK

Everything Everywhere will launch its new customer brand, EE, and its mobile 4G and fibre broadband service in the UK, in four weeks’ time, on 30 October.

In a brief statement issued by Olaf Swantee, the EE CEO said: “This is a significant milestone for the United Kingdom, and for the people and businesses of our country who will now be able to enjoy the huge advantages of superfast 4G technology for the first time. We are very proud to be pioneering, innovating and leading our industry in launching 4G for our nation through our new EE brand.”

EE’s 4G service will offer mobile data at speeds typically five times faster than today’s 3G services. The service will launch in 10 cities on 30 October – London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield – with six more – Belfast, Newcastle, Southampton, Hull, Nottingham and Derby – going live by Christmas. EE says the 4G service will cover 98 per cent of the UK population by 2014.EE has been trialling the service in London, Birmingham, Cardiff, and Bristol for the past three weeks. The early launch date sugests the tests have gone well.

4G handsets available on EE’s network at launch will include the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy SIII LTE, Nokia Lumia 920, Nokia Lumia 820, HTC One XL and the Huawei Ascend P1 LTE.
