30 Per Cent of BBC iPlayer Requests Came from Mobile in April

Mobile devices accounted for 30 per cent of all TV and radio requests on BBC iPlayer in April – a total of 75m requests for the month.

The split was roughly equal but, having overtaken smartphones in March, tablets narrowly held the top spot, with 38m requests compared to 37m.

Interesting, examining TV and radio requests individually gives two very different pictures. Tablets dominance was even stronger for TV programmes, holding 35m (19 per cent) of requests, compared to 30m (17 per cent).

However, for radio – which saw a record-breaking 74m requests in total during April – smartphones come out clearly in front, with 7m (nine per cent) of requests, compared to just 3m (four per cent).

This makes sense for each device, of course – the larger screen of a tablet suits video content well, while the portability of smartphones lends itself to radio.
