There will be 4.9bn devices connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) in 2015, according to Gartner forecasts, an increase of 30 per cent on this year.
This will support total services spending of $69.5bn in 2015, Gartner says, rising to $263bn and 25bn devices by 2020.
The majority of devices (2.9bn) will be used for consumer applications, while enterprise will account for the most revenue. The highest growth rate (96 per cent) will come from the automotive sector.
“The number of connected intelligent devices will continue to grow exponentially, giving ’smart things’ the ability to sense, interpret, communicate and negotiate, and effectively have a digital ‘voice’,” said Gartner VP Steve Prentice. “CIOs must look for opportunities to create new services, usage scenarios and business models based on this growth.
