62 Per Cent Downloaded Apps in the US Last Month

62 per cent of US smartphone owners have downloaded apps in the past 30 days, according to Nielsens Mobile Media Report for Q3, 2011, with 83 per cent of those downloads coming via devices running either iOS or Android.
Based on a monthly survey of 25,000 consumers, the report found that those who downloaded apps had an average of 33 on their device – up 22 per cent compared to 2010. Apps proved more common on iOS, with an average of 44 apps on iPhones, than Android, with an average of 32. 
The most popular way for consumers to discover applications is by searching app stores, at 63 per cent. 57 per cent rely on recommendations from family and friends was also popular, with the popularity of all other methods falling far behind.
81 per cent sent or received messages over the last month, up from 75 per cent in 2009, with the number of messages sent growing by 40 per cent. The amount of time spent making voice calls, however, has fallen 12 per cent over the same period.
