800m Now Using WhatsApp, as App Targets Billion Milestone

WhatsApp CarouselOver-the-top messaging app WhatsApp is now serving 800m monthly active users, according to CEO and co-founder Jan Koum, who revealed the new numbers on his Facebook page.

The announcement comes almost exactly a year after the company announced it had hit 500m users, and the company has seen consistent growth since then, adding roughly 100m active monthly users every four months.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps globally, and has become a popular alternative to traditional SMS messaging in many markets, with more users than Facebooks standalone Messenger app.

Facebook purchased the messaging app last year for $22bn (£14.8bn) and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that he expects the company to contribute to Facebooks bottom line in the long run, but not until after it reaches the billion user milestone. However, given the apps strong growth, it is likely to hit that mark before the end of the year.
