Google Launches UK Global Impact Challenge

Google has launched its first Global Impact Challenge in the UK, inviting British non-profits to submit their proposal for a technology-based project that “has the potential to change society on a large scale”.

Four winners – three picked by a panel of experts including Richard Branson, Tim Berners-Lee and Jilly Forster, and one fan favourite picked by the public in an online vote – will each receive a £500,000 Global Impact Award, as well as Chromebooks and technical assistance from Google staff to implement the idea.

The competition was launched globally last year, giving $23m to seven organisations, including GiveDirectly, which uses mobile banking technology to transfer money directly to the poor.

Applications close on 17 April – until then, registered British non-profit organisations can apply online here.
