Facebook reached 1bn active monthly users on 14 September, with its userbase increasing by 45m over the last three months. Most importantly, 60 per cent of that billion are mobile users.
To commemorate the milestone, Facebook has released a fact sheet detailing a number key milestones. The UK was among the top five Facebooking countries when it surpassed 25m and 50m sign-ups in 2006 and 2007 after social networking swept universities. Today, most new users come from fast-growth and highly populated nations, Brazil, India, Indonesia and Mexico, as well as the US.
The Like phenomenon is likewise unstoppable, with more than 1.13 trillion thumbs up given since it was introduced in 2009. Check-ins and location-based tagging was launched a year later, and 17bn pinpoints have been made.
219bn photos are currently hosted on the site, although Facebook estimates that more than 265bn have been uploaded since the function was added in 2005 – probably until people realised that employers might find and access that one night in Paris album.
Advertising accounted for around 84 per cent of the social networks revenue in Q2 2012, although growth has slowed.
