ABBYY Launches Camera-based Data Capture Tool

Software developer ABBYY has announced its Mobile Data Capture Solution, a document-recognition product for mobile platforms.

The solution is aimed at both consumer and enterprises, enabling mobile devices to capture and share data using the built-in camera. ABBYY says its document-recognition and document-capture technologies, combined with mobile devices, will enable enterprises to expand the range and adoption of their services.

The solution works by combining embedded image-processing on the device with server- or cloud-based intelligent recognition and data capture. The company says that users can instantly extract information from virtually any source, including paper documents, licence plates, restaurant menus, gas and water meters, street signs or packaging. From there, users can use the data to populate forms, update content management applications, or send information for further processing.

“Applications based on the solution will mean that mobile devices can make many time-consuming tasks such as paying bills, ticket registration, banking and completing tax forms fast, easy and simple to accomplish,” says Andrey Isaev, director of ABBYYs technology products department.

But Isaev says the software could be even more beneficial to companies. “By enhancing their services with a mobile channel, companies will get closer to their customers and have even more opportunities for expanding into mobile channels. For example, they can attract new groups of customers from among hundreds of millions of mobile phones users – and then leverage entirely new ways to market and promote themselves through mobile applications that utilise the camera as a scanner. And all the while creating an internal channel for fast data exchange between their own employees and partners.”
