Activision Reveals VR Mode for Next Call of Duty Release

jackal assault call of duty VRPopular videogame franchise Call of Duty has announced that the next installment, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, will include a free virtual reality mode released to coincide with the launch of PlayStation VR.

At the Call of Duty XP fan event in Los Angeles, game creators Activision announced that the PlayStation 4 version of the game would allow PlayStation VR users to access a new game mode that places them in the cockpit of a Jackal space fighter jet.

Details on the PlayStation VR are still scarce, but the device is planned to launch on 13 October for $400 (£300). As Jackal Assault, the VR game mode, is limited to one console and requires the PlayStation VR headset to work, it is unlikely to form a substantial part of the gameplay, but will serve as a tech demo for what the PlayStation VR can offer.

The Call of Duty series is one of the most popular game franchises in the world at the moment, and the introduction of VR is not only a symbol of how the games industry is embracing this new medium, but may even serve to boost orders of the device from eager fans.

It is not clear if the Jackal Assault mode will be available immediately when the game is released, but given that the game is scheduled to arrive in stores on 4 November, after PlayStation VR launches, players are unlikely to be facing a long wait.
