Africa and Middle East Under the Spotlight

Portio Research has released its latest report, Africa and Middle East Mobile Opportunities 2010-2014. The study opens with a broad Mobile Market Overview and then moves in to a series of detailed country profiles, looking at 25 key markets, with facts, figures and essential market data for each.

Portio notes that the region is seeing increasing infrastructure deployment and upgrades, adding that most countries across the region now either have 3G networks or have 3G launches planned. Until recently, most African and Middle Eastern countries had a duopoly market structure – Government being one of them – with strict regulatory structures restricting the entry of foreign players. But now the region is seeing a transformation from the dominance of state-owned operators to a more open marketplace, with increased private-player participation and competition. With continuing consolidation and acquisition of mobile assets underway, the land grab across the African continent and the Middle Eastern region mobile markets has begun in earnest, says Portio, and fantastic opportunities will need securing fast.

The report includes regional and country-level mobile subscriber forecasts to 2014, with 5-year projections for SMS, MMS, mobile email and mobile Instant Messaging. It also identifies the top 10 African and top 10 Middle Eastern countries by mobile subscriber base, and exposes local obstacles to the adoption of mobile services.
