Airbnb is said to be buying a background-check startup in a bid to protect its guests and hosts from scam artists that plague its platform. The terms of the deal remain undisclosed at this current time.

Airbnb is reportedly purchasing Trooly’s intellectual property and engineering team. The deal is expected to close today (19 June) when Trooly shuts down operations as an independent company.

California-based Trooly analyses data from public records, social media and other sources. According to Bloomberg, this technology could help Airbnb track customer violations like side deals between guests and hosts. The startup has been helping Airbnb authenticate user identities since 2015.

Airbnb has struggled to control fraudulent listings and guests circumventing its platform to contact hosts directly – meaning Airbnb don’t earn any money from deals between the parties.

“We look forward to welcoming the Trooly team to Airbnb in the coming weeks,” Airbnb spokesman Tim Rathschmidt told Bloomberg.
