Alphabet to launch drone delivery in Finland next year

Alphabet Google X Wing drone deliveryAlphabet is set to begin trialling its drone delivery service in Finland – months after it began testing the service in Australia.

The drone delivery service comes from Wing, which ‘graduated’ from the Google X research and development organisation earlier this year. The small aircrafts are automated and capable of delivering food, drinks medicine, and other household items to consumers.

Wing is due to arrive in Finland in spring 2019, landing in its first European location. The company plans to use the Nordic nation as a marker for the rest of the world, highlighting the sometimes-problematic weather associated with Northern Europe.

“We’re excited to launch our drone delivery service in Finland in spring of 2019, which will be our first operations in Europe,” reads the Wing website. “Finns are internationally renowned for being early-adopters of new technologies, and we’re looking forward to working with the community and local businesses to find the best way to implement our services in the Helsinki area. Based on what we know about the winter weather in Finland, were pretty confident that if our drones can deliver here, they can deliver anywhere.”

According to the firm, its drones carry a total carbon footprint which is 22 times lower than traditional delivery, due to running off clean electric power and flying emission-free.
