Amazon Appstore Drops Try Before You Buy Testdrive Feature

Amazon Apps L7Amazon has announced that it will be decommissioning the TestDrive feature on its app store, which enabled users to try apps for free before paying to download it.

TestDrive was first launched in March 2011. In the intervening four years, the app market has changed significantly. Amazons announcement attributes the decision to shutter the service to “the increasing use of free to play business models”, which it says has led to “a significant decline in customers using TestDrive”.

The service will be shuttered on 15 April, and automatically removed from the 16,000 apps that currently offer it. These apps will still be available on the Amazon App Store, but without any TestDrive functionality.
