Amazon has reported its first successful drone delivery in the UK, courtesy of its Prime Air service.

The eCommerce giant says it completed a delivery of an Amazon Fire TV stick and a bag of popcorn, in Cambridge to a gentleman named Richard, on 7 December via the unmanned aerial vehicle.

Amazon released a video to show the delivery process – explaining that the drone can fly up to 400ft, carry packages up to 5lbs (2.27kg) and, in this instance, took 13 minutes to reach its destination.

Prime Air is “a delivery system from Amazon designed to safely get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less using unmanned aerial vehicles, also called drones,” Amazon says, on its website,

It adds: “Safety is our top priority. Our vehicles will be built with multiple redundancies, as well as sophisticated sense and avoid technology.”

Amazon’s Cambridge fulfilment centre is home to the drones. From here, they launch and fly completely autonomously, using GPS to find their way to the delivery destination.

At the moment, the Prime Air trial is only open to two people but Amazon hopes to expand to dozens in the coming months.

It is important to note that all those able to use the service are likely to have large gardens, as evidenced by the substantial size of Richard’s land in the released video. In addition, while the drone delivery service will be available seven days a week, drones can only fly in daylight hours and good weather conditions.
