Following the launch of Amazon Coins three months ago, almost half of developers who implemented the virtual currency for their Kindle Fire apps saw weekly revenue jump by more than 50 per cent.
According to Amazon, “hundreds of millions of Amazon Coins” have been spent already. Given the conversion rates, thats somewhere in the millions of dollars.
For apps from indie developers, spending through Amazon Coins outpaced cash following the launch. One example is textPlus, which saw its messaging and calling app revenues grow by more than 300 per cent on Kindle Fire the day after Amazon Coins went live, 78 per cent of which came from Coins.
Its worth noting that Amazon promoted the launch by giving all Kindle Fire users 500 Coins (worth $5) for free, which could skew the figures slightly.
